Amelia Island Concours 2012 Announces Celebration of the Ferrari GTO’s 50th Anniversary

Ferrari GTO

The iconic Ferrari GTO will take center stage at the 17th annual Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance March 9-11, 2012, when the exclusively GTO class takes to field to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Ferrari’s GT masterpiece. This will be a rare gathering of the legendary GT racers that made its international debut at the 1962 12 Hours of Sebring and proceeded to rule international GT racing for three years.

Even a half century after its creation the GTO still commands tremendous respect on the road and track. Built from 1962 through 1964, only 36 three-liter cars and two four-liter cars were created by the factory. Ferrari 250 GTOs were constructed to meet new racing rules for the FIA’s World Championship Grand Touring category.

In Italian GTO means “Grand Turismo Omologato” and translates to “Grand Touring Homologated”. Homologation is a process of establishing a set of specific capacities and dimensions for a racing car. When those statistics are approved by motorsport’s international governing body the racer is officially homologated. The “250″ in 250 GTO is the displacement (expressed in cubic centimeters) of each of the engine’s 12 cylinders.

Racing was Enzo Ferrari’s life. With new GT racing rules drafted for the 1962 World Manufacturers Championship season Ferrari assembled a team led by the gifted and often flamboyant Giotto Bizzarrini. His design and engineering department took the proven and potent 300 h.p. Columbo-designed V12 engine of the World Championship-winning Testa Rossa sports racer and wrapped it in a voluptuous and aerodynamic aluminum coupe body by Sergio Scaglietti.

As the GTO went from drawing board to metal a civil war within Ferrari rocked the organization to its foundations. Before production could begin, Bizzarrini and several key staff left the company and the GTO project after an ugly clash with Ferrari himself. This left 26 year-old Mauro Forghieri to pick up the pieces and bring Ferrari’s newest GT racer to life.

The GTO was introduced to the world on February 24, 1962 at Ferrari’s traditional annual press conference in Modena. Exactly one month later the GTO made its competition debut in Florida at the 12 Hours of Sebring in the hands of three-time Le Mans winner Olivier Gendebien and reigning Ferrari World Champion and two-time Le Mans winner Phil Hill. That debut won the GTO a Sebring class victory and a stunning second place overall in the first World Sports Car Championship event of the season. The winning continued. The GTO won its class in every championship race on the 1962 and 1963 international calendars. In its three-year World Championship racing career the GTO was defeated just twice.

The GTO’s appointments are Spartan. There is neither speedometer nor odometer. But this is a racing GT car, not a typical Ferrari luxury tourer. The aluminum driver’s seat wears a thin layer of Ferrari’s traditional blue canvas over just 24 mm of padding. The only genuine luxury is the elegant 400 mm wooden Nardi three-spoke steering wheel.

“We’ve had Ferrari GTOs on the show field before, but what we have planned for 2012 should astonish even the most devoted Ferrari aficionado,” says Bill Warner, Amelia founder and chairman. “This remarkable sports car is the ultimate GT machine to generations of collectors and racers alike and is one of the most coveted of all the Ferraris. I can’t wait to hear those incredible V12s cross the 18th fairway on Sunday morning.”

Due to its limited production numbers, sleek GT styling, and rich competition history, GTOs are highly prized and considered a work of art by collectors and automotive journalists around the world. The GTO sold originally for about $18,000 in the United States. On the rare occasion when one does change hands, it is usually in extremely private circumstances and the price tag is easily in the multi-million dollar range.

2011 Mansory Ferrari 458 Italia Siracusa

2011-Mansory-Ferrari-458-Italia-Siracusa-Luxury-Auto-Direct (1)

Named after the historic race track on Sicily, this hot blooded Italian rolls onto the fairground stage of the Geneva Motor Show – manufactured in the German city of Brand, the MANSORY Design and Holding GmbH headquarters. The MANSORY Siracusa is based on the Ferrari 458 Italia. Apart from more performance and a boosted appearance, mainly the weight of the automobile was diminished.

Already in the serial Ferrari, the ultra-light and high-strength material carbon is used abundantly. And MANSORY continues to apply this line with the Siracusa by making carbon the main material of all body components. Each single element of the aerodynamic design is manufactured in perfect surface quality and exactly fitted to the automobile.

The main eye catcher of the new Siracusa front is the striking apron with its optimised air inlets for a better ventilation of the front coolers. In combination with the new bonnet, MANSORY does not only create an aggressive look, but also generates additional downforce. At the sides, newly designed side skirts are added. These calm down the air flow between the axles and provide additional cooling air to the engine compartment through integrated ducts. The diffuser which is fitted into the new back skirt stabilises the rear during high velocities and in connection with the rear wing, generates contact pressure at the rear axle. The body kit is completed with MANSORY carbon blades which replace the rear window. Compared to the serial Ferrari 458 Italia, the refining specialist saves 70 kilogramme weight due to its autoclave carbon components.

But the MANSORY Siracusa does not only convince with its fascinating design. As a result from an optimised engine management, a sports air filter and a sports exhaust system, not only the engine performance, but also the acceleration increases significantly. Owing to 590 hp / 434 kW and 560 Nm, the eight cylinder car accelerates in breathtaking 3.2 seconds from 0 to 100 km/h. The top speed is 330 km, higher than with the basic Ferrari model.

The carriage components in the Siracusa are especially adjusted to the improved engine performance and the dynamic driving behaviour. These consist of four sports anti-shocks combined with progressively winded lowering springs. Therefore, the centre of gravity is lowered by 20 millimetres compared to the serial model.

As a perfect wheel-tyre combination, MANSORY adds forged rims with central locking in the dimensions 9 x 20 and 11 x 21 with Michelin PS2 tyres measuring 245/35 ZR20 at the front axle and 305/30 ZR21 at the rear axle.

Also the interior is enhanced with the MANSORY refining kit. The MANSORY upholstery department stylishly combines most precious materials such as most delicate leather, ultra-suede and carbon. The leather which is processed with masterly skill is very endurable and still extraordinarily soft. The characteristic natural product with its special grain and the masterly perfected decorative stitches render an extravagant impression around the newly designed centre console. Another highlight is the newly developed full size airbag sports steering wheel and the aluminium pedals. MANSORY achieves the perfect symbiosis between dynamic functionality and luxurious atmosphere.

2011 Ferrari SA Aperta

2011-Ferrari-SA-Aperta-Luxury-Auto-Direct (2)

Ferrari is delighted to announce the presentation of the SA APERTA at the Paris International Motor Show 2010. This is a special series model of which a strictly limited number of just 80 will be built. All have already been sold. Ferrari chose to build 80 SA APERTAs in celebration of Pininfarina’s 80th anniversary. The SA nomenclature also pays homage to both Sergio and Andrea Pininfarina whose company and work have been linked to the most successful road-going cars ever built at Maranello.

The SA APERTA is a true roadster which allows its occupants to enjoy the superlative emotions afforded by our signature front-engined V12 architecture in a completely open-top setting. In fact, it has just a light soft top designed to be resorted to only if the weather gets particularly bad. A low-slung windscreen and the fact that it crouches lower to the ground than our other models lend the SA APERTA an exceptionally aerodynamic sleekness. Its profile arches back from the A-post to two aerodynamic fins beautifully integrating the two roll-bars which themselves cleverly mimic the outline of the seats.

The chassis has been redesigned to deliver a standard of stiffness comparable to that of a closed berlinetta and there is a negligible weight difference also, thanks to work done on the chassis structure.

Thanks to the 670 CV engine beneath its bonnet, the SA APERTA beautifully embodies the sporty spirit of the 599, incorporating Ferrari’s most advanced technology to deliver absolutely benchmark performance and superb driving pleasure. Its interior too is stylishly sporty with particularly sophisticated materials, trim and colours used throughout. The virtually endless combinations available guarantee that each and every SA APERTA is absolutely unique.

Driven by Jean Blaton and Leon Dernier, the Ferrari 250 GT – serial number 1321 – won 1st place in its GT class and 3rd overall at Le Mans in ’59 as the No. 11 car.  Earlier that same year, it took 1st place at the 1000 km Nürburgring endurance race.  After its race career, the Ferrari was privately owned by only a few collectors – the most recent owning the car since the 1970s – and this 250 GT was last seen in public in the early 1990s at Road America.

“We are excited to offer collectors a chance to bid on this world class Tour de France 1959 Ferrari, the type of car that offers quality, provenance and is fresh to market,” said President Dana Mecum.  “The list of amazing vehicles continues to grow for our upcoming Monterey Auction.  We have expanded it to two full days as more than 400 investment-grade collector cars, exotic vehicles and ultra rare boats are scheduled to cross the block.”
